OSBA Board of Trustees adopts guiding principles for association

The OSBA Board of Trustees, at its May 17 meeting, approved new guiding principles and vision priorities for the association.

The principles and vision priorities were developed by the OSBA Visionary Initiatives for Strategic Action (VISA) Team, which began developing a long-range organizational plan for the association in September. The team’s goal was to set in motion a proactive, far-sighted plan to support OSBA’s mission of providing the best service possible for Ohio’s public school boards. The team has achieved that by producing a dynamic document that can be updated well into the future as needs and challenges evolve.

The VISA Team, which is made up of school board members and OSBA staff, will continue to monitor the plan as it is implemented. Currently, eight teams of staff members are working to accomplish the plan’s first-year goals. Another team is compiling the plan for publication.

Following are the OSBA Guiding Principles, as approved by the Board of Trustees:

• We value and expect effective communication.

• We value and expect integrity.

• We value and expect collaboration and partnership.

• We value and expect superior customer service.

• We value and foster expertise.

The OSBA Vision Priorities, as approved by the Board of Trustees, are:

• Our infrastructure, processes and resources are sustainable, flexible and dynamic to support mass customization.

• Our outreach efforts ensure collaboration and participation with any individual or organization that shapes the future of education.

• Our members receive superior services, optimizing the value of their membership.

• We effectively communicate with staff, members and stakeholders for the exchange of ideas and sharing of information.

• Our members want to participate in OSBA programs, activities and governance, and actively advocate for public education.

• We are a pivotal player in the political and educational arenas.

“As public education leaders, OSBA members and staff must take a key role in setting the pace in Ohio’s education policy arena,” said Richard Lewis, OSBA executive director. “All of the work that is going into this strategic plan, as well as the commitment to keep it alive and growing, will drive our efforts well into the future. This plan will keep OSBA on the cutting edge, which, in turn, will enable the association to empower its members to achieve the number one goal of public schools — student achievement.”

BA Visionary Initiatives for Strategic Action (VISA) Team wrapped up its strategic planning work last month and assigned the plan’s first round of goals to association staff members. Full details of the plan are to be presented to the OSBA Board of Trustees at its May meeting for the board’s discussion and approval.

The VISA Team, which began meeting in September, was made up of school board members and OSBA staff. Its goal was to set in motion a progressive, far-sighted plan to support OSBA’s mission of providing the best service possible for Ohio’s public school boards. The team has achieved that by producing a dynamic document that can be updated well into the future as needs and challenges evolve.

Led by Cornerstone Consulting Associates LLC facilitator Sue Waechter at its April 11 meeting, the planning group selected eight goals that staff teams will tackle in the coming year. The teams are currently developing action steps that will lead to the successful completion of each goal.

VISA Team members also developed the OSBA Guiding Principles; created a process to monitor progress on the strategic plan and keep it driving the association’s work; set up a time line for publishing and distributing the plan; and agreed on a perpetual planning calendar that will ensure the document is continually renewed and updated.

“We at OSBA — staff and leadership alike — are excited to embark on this new chapter in the association’s long history of serving Ohio’s school board members,” said Executive Director Richard Lewis. “We look forward to partnering with our members and all public education stakeholders to meet the formidable challenges of the 21st century. We welcome our members’ ideas, suggestions and input on the future direction of the association.”

“By planning, working and achieving together, we can provide the best education possible for the state’s nearly 2 million schoolchildren. That, in turn, will lead to a stronger economy for Ohio and the nation, for there is no better investment in the future than education.”
